Loughborough
‘Ough’ are possibly the weirdest four letters in the
English language, admitting pronunciations as diverse as
- ‘oh’ as in ‘throw no dough, though’
- ‘uh’ (schwa) as in
‘Middlesbrough's thoroughly worried’
- ‘uff’ as in ‘rough Clough stuffs tough fluff’
- ‘off’ as in
‘a toff who coughs in a trough’
- ‘aw’ as in
‘I ought to have fought but I did nought’
- ‘oo’ as in ‘through the queue to you’
- ‘ow’ as in ‘the Plough looks like a cow
from a bough in Slough’
- ‘och’ as in ‘lough’, the Irish spelling
of ‘loch’, and ‘brough’, an alternative spelling
of ‘broch’
So although one ought to pronounce ‘Loughborough’ as
‘low-brow’, oddly not enough people seem to do so.
But where can you get to from Loughborough?
